hi,
thanks. but how do I get that far I mean how can I edit the file at all, when in the G U I mode?
is there a way of calling up a commandline prompt like in windows?

Check your /etc/inittab file.
It should tell you the run level to use for multi user mode without X11.
Normally this is 3.

If so edit the  init default line:
id:3:initdefault:
and reboot.
