Hi,
As stated in the subject, we're talking about a console screen reader,
so that eliminates Gnome. I did try YASR a very long time ago on I
think Debian and got errors so I gave up. I think it said it couldn't
access the serial port or couldn't find a synthesizer. This would be
with a Doubletalk LT and Speakup. I think I turned off Speakup when I
was testing but it seemed to make no difference. I also tried Emacspeak
without Speakup and yes, it works, but is difficult if you don't use
Emacs. Also, it is not a daemon and is useless without Emacs installed.

Yasr should theoretically work with FreeBSD, although I haven't tried
it in a long time. If you couldn't get it working, then I'm curious
what problems you had. Emacspeak should also work (as well as Orca if
you're using GNOME).
