Debian has an unstable release one can upgrade to after the stable release has been installed. There's even an experimental release for the really brave souls. It's a matter of editing /etc/apt/sources.list and changing stable in that file to unstable and you might want to add contrib and non-free to those lines. After that, try an aptitude dist-upgrade command and see what happens. You do know about apt-cache search "search string" | less right? That's how you find out about new software that's available.
