The one and only (and most simple way) of installing the mplayer under a Debian is: - by adding deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main (NOT stable since there is a problem on christian's srv, so use sarge etch or so instead) - then by doing apt-get update && apt-get install mplayer-586 w32codecs realplayer and THAT's all All you need is provided.
