You need to make the symbolic link /vmlinuz point to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18. Do something like the following

# ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18 /vmlinuz

The # meaning do this as root and you might have something appended to
the vmlinuz-2.4.18. Then run lilo and reboot and it should be running a
2.4 kernel. Whether or not this will help in getting your sound working
I cannot say.
