PUTTY is a Windows terminal emulator with SSH support. For those with
limited computing experience, probably best to set it up so it connects
directly to the system in question, as the default is the "select a
connection" screen which is a bit hard for anyone to navigate due to all
the options.

You use PUTTY to fix Windows, or something like that.

Cygwin provides common Linux / Unix utilities to Windows users. A
version of "ssh" from the command line, a lot to install for just a ssh
client, but much of the rest is very useful.

The default Windows terminal emulator use to be terrible, so I've always
install Teraterm or PUTTY, I think they updated it for Windows 2000, but
I couldn't wait till the year 2000 for a decent dumb terminal emulator.
I haven't tried SSH on Teraterm.

There are a lot of talk, chat and bulletin board products available for
Linux, but many do far too much, or are difficult to use, or complex to
set up, or both. "write" is simple, splats all over what you are doing,
and can be disabled if you need to concentrate. The various talk
packages are also quite good in this regard, let us know how you get on
with the split screen mode.
