Hi Brent,
OK. Here's a quick and dirty rundown on what
needs to be done in order to interactively and independently install Red Hat
9. Unfortunately, there's currently no Speakup modified distribution as
there was for Red Hat 7. I hope Bill, Kirk and the rest of the guys
who are competent with the programming end of things will be able to rectify
this situation in the near future. I'm a good network/systems admin, but
not much of a programmer... :-)
OK. First, here's what you need:
Red Hat 9 CD-ROMs
Two boot disks based on boot.img and netdrv.img
from CD.
2 computers: target system & box with DHCP
server & telnet client
We will call the machine onto which Red Hat 9 is
being installed the target and the machine with the DHCP server and telnet
client the manager.
Here are some steps:
1.
Set up DHCP server on the manager to assign a
single IP address. You will use this address later to access the target
using the telnet client.
2.
Insert the first boot disk into the target's
floppy drive and boot the system.
3.
After disk activity has stopped, but before 10
seconds have elapsed, type the following command:
text dd telnet
Press enter to proceed.
4.
After disk activity has ceased, insert the second
boot disk (the disk with the network drivers) and press enter twice to
proceed.
5.
After disk activity has ceased, press tab then
press enter. You have only about one or two minutes to proceed with
the next step.
6.
Using the telnet client on the manager, initiate a
telnet session to the IP address you have configured in the DHCP
server.
7.
Proceed with installation, being careful to
watch the cursor tracking... :-)

Wow, OK, it'd be cool if one can do it with a
single machine, as I definitely don't have 3 systems available, one for dhcp,
one for speech, and this one to install to, or don't you need
that?

Agreed. I am very disappointed that we do
not yet have a Speakup modified distribution set of RH 9 as we did for
versions of RH 7. There is a way to do it through telnet, but you must
have a DHCP server to assign the IP address, etc. I can write a fairly
detailed explanation of how I accomplished the feat, but I'll have to do
that for you over the weekend.

down 9. The name of the first image it needs is different, i guess, wonder
how I'll get this updated? Sighted assistance is no option.

Is it OK to use my rh 8.0 network boot installer disk
to upgrade to 9.0, so I have speech through the process? I understand I
have to install the kernel RPM to have speakup, but I don't have another
system to do it by telnet. (I hope to be getting a Pac Mate soon, as
state rehab purchased one for me, as I decided that I thought it's
better than the braille note because of connectivity, and that you can
use audible.com and other Pocket PC apps that the bn doesn't allow for.
Does it have an accessible telnet client so I could pull the install off
that way, or should I just use the rh 8.0 bootnet.img and point the http
to the appropriate directory for 9 on redhat's server? I may give it a
try anyways, sort of updated some gnu stuff manually to attempt
gnopernicus, but am having trouble with glib and gtk and autoconf and
cspi, and other stuff like that. What would I need to do to 9 to prepare
for gnopernicus to install? I have the script someone sent, errors out
on 8.0, think I need to ad the all important
#!/bin/sh
line to the top, but the compiles error out
on 8.0, choking on autoconf not being the right version when trying to
compile gtk or glib, since gnopernicus needs a later lib than 8.0
provides.
