sox, not socks.  Use the simplifying script front
end to sox that comes in the sox package, called
"rec".  Do "man rec" for details.  You'll also
need to use a mixer like aumix (which will work in
text mode) to turn on recording for the right
sound card input, depending on what you are using,
and set it's volume.
