Of course, a way to test this would be to temporarily try the braillelite on your first serial port. I could be wrong about this, but I think you would not have to recompile brltty. You could either put in the serial port from the command line or using /etc/brltty.conf if the debian package still uses that. Just depends on how much of a pain it is to undo and reconncect whatever synth you are using for speakup.
