RE: debian install help please

I can't issue man page commands because I have no linux system to log into.
Imagine that I'm installing debian for the first time on a system which can
hold linux, but whose hard drive has no data. That is where I'm am
currently.
The debian install disks supposedly will support my 3c509 network card, but
for some reason, I can't get out onto my network using these install disks.
I can't seem to find anything in the install doc that would tell me how to
explicitly tell the install program I have a 3com 3c509 isa card on irq3
The router I'm connected to does supply dhcp, and I know the card and hub
are okay because they worked under redhat once I enabled them in the
modules.conf file.

You get onscreen reports. These tell you things thaat people here need
to know in order to give you useful guidance.

These commaands have nothing to do with any particulaar distribution of
Linux. They're quite generic. Have you read any of the HOWTOs about
networking?

And, you could answer this question for yourself by pulling up the maan
paaage for each of the commands I suggested. Don't know what lsmod does?
Type 'man lsmod' to find out, for example.

1.) Log on as root.

2.) For each commaand, enter it as shown and note the results:

	a.)	cat /etc/network/interfaces

Actually, this one is Debian specific, and not Red Hat specific. Red Hat
uses a different organizational scheme for network related data.

The 'cat' command tells Linux to "print out the contents of the file"
/etc/network/interfaces.

Actually, you should probably just paste the contents of that file into
an email message for us to see.

b.)	The command lsmod prints out data for every module
loaded. So, lsmod |grep 3c would only print out those responses that hat
'3c' in them, in other words whatever is relevant to 3COM.

If you get nothing here, or the wrong something, the
explanation for your problem becomes clear. The correct module is
missing.

c.)	ifconfig -a says print out logical network data for all
known interfaces.
