Hey, Mike... I do not think you need the mouse to install Gnome or even X. Install Slackware 8.1 normally, using the SCSI boot disk if you need SCSI support. Usually, at the end of the installation, Slackware is going to ask you if you'd like mouse support in console, answer "yes" and select your PS/2 mouse. For X support, just run (as root): /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and indicate that your mouse is a PS/2. You need to add a few lines to the final XF86 configuration file if you want to have the support of the "wheel", but that's really easy (hint: do a search on http://www.google.com for "wheel PS/2 mouse Linux XFree86"). Finally, just enter (as root) "xwmconfig", which is the utility Slackware provides to choose your favourite graphical interface. You should see a list of all Windows managers that have been installed, select "Gnome" in the list and you should be all set. If your PS/2 mouse really can't be seen under X after all this, it's probably an issue with your mouse, not Slackware. Hope this helps!
