Installing Linux

Hello all,

If a hard disk is partitioned into three drives, is it essential to install
Linux in the very first partition? I was told that Linux should be
installed in the partition containing the initial 204 boot cylinders. How
does installing Linux on a partition other than the primary one affect the
way Linux works?

Thanks,
Geetha
