Internal modem is treated as a modem connected to serial port assuming
it's not winmodem. Winmodems are a beast of special breed that causes
problems to most linux users.

You won't need special driver since Linux uses generic drivers for serial
port connection. Depending on your PC configuration, modem is one of the 4
serial ports. In linux world all devices have to have an entry under
directory /dev. Serail ports are named ttyS0, ttyS1, etc. There are other
names also but this should work in most cases. Most of the time you will
have a link named modem to a serial port device. I used to have a modem
with IRQ 15 as a serial port 3 in old days so I had to make a link between
/dev/ttyS2 to /dev/modem. It's possible that the default link for modem is
to ttyS0.

To test the connection I used programs minicom and kermit. Kermit is not
completely free like other open source software so you won't find it on
Redhat CDs. There is also a tool for serial port manipulation and
configuration called setserial. It allows you to change serial port
parameters like speed, parity, stop bits, etc.

That's possible but most of us would rather do it the other way around. As
said before, if it's not winmodem you are better off using linux for modem
connection to the net. It's possible to set it up so that it redials if
the connection is lost for some reason.

Good luck,
