Jim, you're barking up the wrong tree. It's not the linux with sound card support that you want to look into. It's the several sound support systems which run under linux that you need to look at. And, yes, you'll find there's a preference here among these systems, but our reasons may not be your reasons. So, once again, look at the alsa sound project, and look at oss force. These are the two principle "systems" for sound support under linux. Both are available via any of the linux distributions. Once again, these are: http://www.alsa-project.org http://www.opensound.com Another excellent source of information about available sound related applications on linux is: http://www.eca.cx Lastly, may I suggest that one of the premier research facilities regarding electronic and computer sound is the ccarma facility at Stanford University--just down the street from where you live and work? Why not go pay them a visit? They used to have open house for just such visits once a month, as I recall. They're also on the web at: http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu On Tue, 25 Sep 2001, Jim Stevenson wrote: > I would appreciate pointers to comparisons of bsd and the several brands of linux. > > Which of these has best soundcard support? > > Are any better with sound generating prrograms such as are used in audio research? > > Are there differences in running speakup or emacs speak on any of them? > > Please, do not be so rude as to tell me to just search, without telling me > where to search!!! > > If you must quote me, please put your comments first. > > I have already listened to mine. > I read email with speech. > So it is not possible to scroll past the quotes without listening to them again, > to quickly get to the new information. > > Thanks. > > > > _______________________________________________ > > Blinux-list@redhat.com > https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/blinux-list > -- Janina Sajka, Director Technology Research and Development Governmental Relations Group American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) Email: janina@afb.net Phone: (202) 408-8175 Chair, Accessibility SIG Open Electronic Book Forum (OEBF) http://www.openebook.org Will electronic books surpass print books?
