problems connecting to ameritech.net dsl: debugging trtried

DSL is often, though not always in my experience, separate from ppp. So, 
let's back up a bit. Where and how are you connected? The DSL provider 
gave you a router box, right? Part of that is a wire from the phone jack 
to the box. Another part is a wire from the box to your computer. What on 
your computer is it connecting to? In my case, it's an ethernet card, so 
its ifconfig that configures my connection, and route add default that 
identifies my gateway.

I do understand that some DSL providers are actually packaging all of this 
into a card, so that the wire from the wall goes into an rj11 on the card 
that goes into a pci slot in your computer. I am still not copnvinced, 
however, that you'r doing ppp--though that's certainly possible. So, what 
devices does dmesg show?
