Central point , then, is that you can get your install talking by passing a synth string at the lilo prompt: vmlinuz speakup_synth=ltlk is an example for the Litetalk, and assumes ttyS0, the first serial port. You make this automatic and permament by editing your /etc/lilo.conf file . Simply add a line below the "READONLY" for the section about the kernel (there should only be one) that says: append="speakup_synth=ltlk" Obviously, modify to conform to your actual synth.
