Hi,

You could try using OVMF (and use -bios /path/to/ovmf.fd) and boot
directly from the VMDK image, instead of passing the kernel and args.

Also, I've seen some time-out and booting into a rescue shell, see
SPEC-3357, so you could try that if using OVMF does the same.
