May I ask which source code you used?
The simple-egl inside weston source doesn't not using windowmanager,
or homescreen. Can not display it's surface.

The config.xml inside wgt contains appid and version,
If you want change simple-egl to poi, you should change config.xml also.
Not just rename wgt file.

Here is a sample using simple-egl with homescreen, windowmanager.
You can try this one.
