Glad to know I'm not the only one struggling with this! Once I get
it working, I'll post a step by step guide which hopefully will help
other people in the same situation started.

I've managed to get everything working with the Promise supplied
driver - I just don't seem to be able to get the native drivers working
even with new kernel compiles.

I've also tried Phoebe :-(

I've been tempted by other distributions as well, but I'm pretty
familiar with RedHat and it's pretty much the first time I've truely
become stuck!

You could get in trouble for calling FreeBSD a version of Linux!

It certainly would be nice if the various distributions could support
these sort of controllers out of the box - as you say they are
increasingly common and people do want to use them
