how do I controll the disks?

We plan the following:
redhat 7.3 server with fasttrack 100 Tx2 conroller for raid1;
The fasttrack 100 Tx2 will be connected to 2 IDE-Disks, each with 60 Gb. So we have a raid1-system with 60Gb available.
The raid1-system we will use for non-os-data. According to some howtos we will have the device /dev/ataraid/d0.
Now my questions:
1. How can I controll during the running system, if BOTH disks are ok? With software-raid I only have to type "cat /proc/mdstat". But how do I handle this with hardware-raid?

2.  How do I determine that one disk fails?

3. Can I change the failed disk during the running system.

Thanks for help.
