Promise & htp are NOT hardware raid. They are software raid only. Software
is in promise/htp bios and work only in ms-dos. Windows and linux take
more control ower machine and raid software must be in drivers. Still
machine cpu do raid.

Hardware raid is microcontroller based that take control over disks, and
gives only array out to machine. Microcontroller do all raid functions.

Promise fasttrack and htp370 based card are not hardware raid.
But promise supertrack is hardware raid (linux support is not good)
If want do cheap _hardware_ raid in linux buy 3ware escalade 7810 or 7850.

correct arjan?

Maybe correct is "retry to use HPT-370 driver raid functions"
I think linux software raid is beter, /proc interface, lot of machines in
world run that, stabile, hot-add, hot-spare, hot-reconstrunction functions

Things can change, now I trust more linux software raid than ataraid...

ataraid is developed for that in same machine can be windows and linux.
