So if one is not forced to use HPT BIOS-supported RAID (as far as I heard some M$ systems require this), why bother with all those binary-only drivers and so on? I have installed RHL 7.2 on ABIT BX-133 RAID motherboard (which has HPT370A on-board), using two 40GB Seagate drives and linux software raid-1 (mirroring) without any problems, then upgraded kernel and other packages from ftp://updates.redhat.com/7.2 and everything is still working fine. (I used LILO rather than GRUB if I remember correctly, but the only reason was that I was familiar with LILO and was rather short of time).
