I've booked flights online in both Aus and the UK and in both countries I've been able to use a credit card in a different name from the traveller. As Alireza says, the only problem you will have is if you try to check in via an automatic kiosk as they usually require you to identify yourself by swiping the credit card used to make the purchase. Manual check-in usually only requires photo ID.
