I don't remember the gate at which we arrived, but we did use a jetway.
The gate we left from was gate 1. It reminded me of a commuter area say
in Memphis.

Southwest uses Terminal 1, which is the older of SAN's two terminals.
What gate did you use?  Most of the time they use a jetway.  One time I
disembarked from the rear door of a United Shuttle 737 at SAN and walked
across the ramp to the terminal.
