The fuel surcharge, which is effective immediately, adds $3 for each one-way ticket and $6 for round-trip flights in the United States and Canada. With the increase -- which rival carriers declined to match -- American's fuel surcharge is now $13 on one-way trips and $26 round-trip. "Fuel prices have continued to escalate, leading to American's decision = to re-impose this modest increase in its fuel surcharge," the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline said in a statement. American, the world's largest airline, said the average spot price for a gallon of jet fuel two months ago was 83 cents. The average price on Thursday had risen to 99 cents per gallon. Each 1-cent increase in the price of jet fuel translates into an additional $30 million annual expense for American, the company said.
