I understand people may feel threatened by work going out from their firm, town, country, but if you at it more broadly trade is good for communities generally (though not necessarily for every individual). For instance, if the US only buys goods and services from within the US, how are Indians and others going to be able to buy anything from the US? If Boeing has a monopoly of the US market but (logically) is also confined to that market, will that really benefit the US? Or in more narrowly 'local' terms - if GM in Flint, Michigan is self-sufficient and has a monopoly of the local auto market, is that good? I realise that these are extreme examples.
