The problem with your logic is that it is usually a one-way trip out of the US.  Due to unreasonable tariffs, many countries sell more to the US than the US sells to them. As an example, look at Russia.  If you notice, many of the non-Russian aircraft are leased and are registered in foreign countries because the Russian government imposes a tarriff of as much as 40%.
