CHICAGO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL

) said on Thursday it would start flying Boeing (BA

777-200 planes in January on its daily flights between Atlanta and
Tokyo.

Delta said the wide-body planes would replace older MD-11 aircraft on
that route. The Atlanta-based No. 3 U.S. airline said in April that it
planned to stop flying MD-11 jets by the end of the year.

The 777s, designed for long-haul trips, have 52 business class seats and
225 coach seats. Coach passengers have personal video screens and
adjustable footrests and headrests.

Northwest Airlines, one of Delta's codeshare partners, on Wednesday
unveiled its new A330-300, which has nearly fully reclinable seats and
personal on-demand entertainment systems in coach.

The A330s, made by European plane maker Airbus (EAD

), seats 298 passengers, including 34 in business class, and will
replace the DC-10s Northwest currently flies on transatlantic routes.

Delta currently operates one flight a day between Atlanta and Tokyo. The
carrier has eight 777s in its fleet, which it previously used on other
routes. Delta is expecting to take delivery of two more 777s in 2005 and
an additional three in 2006, a spokeswoman said.=20
