Not sure why WN does that with PAX seating but that is very common in
military aircraft. Most seats face backwards in military aircraft
because in the even of an accident...instead of facing forward and being
thrown foward into/with impact...your back is 'to the action' and thus
deemed safer and increased chances survival. That's the story I was
told.
