I've heard it on A320s with CFM56 engines only; the ones with IAE V2500s (like United) don't make the same sound, nor do United's A319s. I've also heard it on the two A340s I've flown on (Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa). And as you note the CFM56s on B737s do not make the same sound. I'd love to get to the bottom of this. -- Michael C.
