Southwest Florida airport to test new security technology FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) =97 Southwest Florida International Airport has been= =20 chosen to test emerging security technology, officials said. The airport=20 south of Fort Myers, along with Dulles International near Washington, D.C.,= =20 were the first of 20 facilities to be named test sites for the Airport=20 Access Control Program, Lee County Port Authority officials announced=20 Monday. Seventy-five of the nation's 429 commercial airports applied. The=20 airports, which were chosen by the Transportation Security Administration,= =20 will test and evaluate new screening methods such as iris, face, voice,=20 fingerprint or hand scanning, as well as security door detection systems,=20 advanced video processing, digital closed-circuit television monitoring,=20 and the integration of new and existing technologies. Southwest Florida=20 International Airport has a 20-year-old terminal, but construction has=20 begun on a new one that is expected to open in 2005. "Obviously we wanted=20 to be looking into the latest and greatest technologies," airport director= =20 Robert M. Ball said. Other emerging technologies to be tested include:=20 systems to identify and admit airport workers and vehicles to the airport's= =20 apron or runways; systems to ensure only authorized people and vehicles=20 enter air cargo facilities; systems to screen vehicles and employees=20 entering security-sensitive general aviation areas at the airport.
