Southwest Florida airport to test new security technology

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) =97 Southwest Florida International Airport has been=
=20
chosen to test emerging security technology, officials said. The airport=20
south of Fort Myers, along with Dulles International near Washington, D.C.,=
=20
were the first of 20 facilities to be named test sites for the Airport=20
Access Control Program, Lee County Port Authority officials announced=20
Monday. Seventy-five of the nation's 429 commercial airports applied. The=20
airports, which were chosen by the Transportation Security Administration,=
=20
will test and evaluate new screening methods such as iris, face, voice,=20
fingerprint or hand scanning, as well as security door detection systems,=20
advanced video processing, digital closed-circuit television monitoring,=20
and the integration of new and existing technologies. Southwest Florida=20
International Airport has a 20-year-old terminal, but construction has=20
begun on a new one that is expected to open in 2005. "Obviously we wanted=20
to be looking into the latest and greatest technologies," airport director=
=20
Robert M. Ball said. Other emerging technologies to be tested include:=20
systems to identify and admit airport workers and vehicles to the airport's=
=20
apron or runways; systems to ensure only authorized people and vehicles=20
enter air cargo facilities; systems to screen vehicles and employees=20
entering security-sensitive general aviation areas at the airport. Ball=20
said he expects a team of security agency officials and equipment=20
manufacturers to visit the airport within the next five months to decide=20
which technology would be best tested there.
