Many cities, including CYVR might even place some of their transmitters
or nearby high-stands of ground or buildings. I believe Vancouver
arrival and departure frequencies are located on the north-shore
mountains.

I receive ground and tower communications about 5 miles south
(perpendicular) to the 8R/28L CYVR runway.

I bought a Maycom FR-108 radio from my local aviation store for my son
and myself. It was the equivalent of $110USD.
