Probably because the 720 got its number when the United CEO said he would
never buy an airplane with a number ending in 7.

Which in itself is kind of funny, because the 247D was built for United when
Boeing and United were part of the same company.  As far as I know, it was
the beginning of the Boeing 7.

Sorry about the "pretty ugly".  "Fairly ugly"?  No, that won't do either.
Maybe "Sort of ugly".
