Delta to restore some flights starting in June CHICAGO (Reuters) =97 Delta Air Lines said Thursday that it will begin=20 restoring in June most flights suspended because of the Iraq war, but=20 lingering weak demand will likely keep some cuts in place for the rest of=20 the year. "The recovery in demand following the Gulf War in 1991 took about= =20 nine months," Subodh Karnik, Delta's senior vice president-Network and=20 Revenue Management, said. "We don't see any indication that this recovery=20 will be any different." Delta, the No. 3 U.S. air carrier, said it expects= =20 passenger demand to start to come back as military action in Iraq slows=20 down. June capacity will be 7% below the airline's original plan for main=20 operations, an improvement from 12% cuts for the month of May. Earlier in=20 April, Delta reported a $466 million net loss for the first quarter, on top= =20 of a net loss of more than $1.2 billion for last year. Other large U.S.=20 airlines expect to continue through May or beyond some capacity cuts put in= =20 place because of the war or because of the pneumonia-like virus SARS, or=20 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Delta will resume a normal flight=20 schedule between New York and several cities in Europe, and reinstate other= =20 international service from its base in Atlanta, Georgia. The airline will=20 also bring back some domestic flights that were cut in March and April.=20 Delta plans to resume regular service between New York and Athens,=20 Barcelona, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Madrid, Nice, Rome and Venice.
