Delta Air cuts capacity 12% as demand falls ATLANTA (Reuters) =97 Delta Airlines said Monday it will cut its network=20 capacity by about 12% because the Iraq war is causing fewer people to fly.= =20 Delta is the last of the five largest U.S. airlines =97 which also include= =20 American Airlines, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Continental=20 Airlines =97 to announce staff or capacity cuts in the last week. "Military= =20 action in the Middle East and the resulting heightened security=20 sensitivities have contributed to a steep decline in passenger demand,"=20 said Subodh Karnik, a Delta senior vice president. Delta, which is based in= =20 Atlanta, said it will not eliminate domestic routes but will cut flights on= =20 routes with multiple scheduled flights. Some trans-Atlantic flights will=20 also be suspended, it said. The U.S. changes are effective on Thursday and= =20 the trans-Atlantic changes on April 6. Both will last at least through=20 April, Delta said. Last week, Northwest cut its flight schedule by 12% and= =20 United by 8%, while American cut international flights by 6%.
