In my opinion, the Republic/Northwest merger should not have occured because it made MSP basically a one-airline town. Same thing with Ozark/TWA and St. Louis. Delta/Western was a good merger, even though I hated seeing the name of Western leave the airline scene. Western's and Delta's route systems, for the most part, complimented each other. The merger of Pan Am and National cold have been a good merger except for the stupidity of Pan Am's management. They were able to get more aircraft at what was basically a bargain basement price. Instead of keeping National's routes intact, they should have acted rapidly to get rid of the shorter routes (NA had whole lot of them!) and redeploy the aircraft to better feed Pan Am's international services.
