Regulation of the airlines meant, in a nutshell, that the government, through the Civil Aeronautics Board (orginally Civil Aeronautics Authority), regulated all aspects of the airline industry. Actually, it was an economic regulation that was not very efficient. The two major things functions of this regulation included: - airlines were told which citiies they could fly to and how many stops they needed to make to fly between those cities. For example, Air West could fly between LA and San Francisco but they had to make one or more stops between the two cities. - they were told how much they could charge It was very inefficient. It would take years for an airline to get permission to fly where they wanted to fly. It also stiffled competition. This regulation applied only to interstate carriers. Airlines flying intrastate only, such as PSA and Holiday, were exempt from the regulations. They still had to follow FAA regs, though.
