Closing the "mini-hub" in Columbus was the RIGHT thing to do for AWA. A
drain ($25m) and distraction as LAS & PHX are where the action (and real
money) is. The key to getting out was brokering a deal with Chautauqua
Airlines (one of the MesaAir divisions) to let them off the hook and sending
RJs to Delta. Cactus is flush with cash and has been doing a great job
filling seats and getting there on time. Howsomever...it's a different
landscape out there for everyone. From an operational and cost point of
view, AWA has their act together. Plus their western hubs are to die for.
Whether the public wants to fly as much this year as in the past is more
difficult to figure out than who Joe Millionaire will pick!
