America West extends meals experiment
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) =97 America West Airlines will extend its experiment=20
selling meals aboard some flights. The carrier began selling meals ranging=
=20
from $3 snacks packs to $10 chicken Kiev earlier this month. The test,=20
conducted on 34 flights of 2{ hours or more, was expected to end this week,=
=20
but the airline has decided to extend the test another month before=20
deciding whether to expand the program. One decision the company has made:=
=20
to scrap the chicken Kiev. "Chicken Kiev was a really full meal. We got=20
some feedback from customers that was a little more food than they needed.=
=20
We're going more to a sandwich type of offering," said spokeswoman Janice=20
Monahan. America West has said the "Buy on Board" program is not designed=20
to be a moneymaker but instead to relieve the expense of in-flight meal=20
service. Several other carriers have considered similar offerings. Like=20
much of the airline industry, Tempe-based America West has been hammered=20
with losses since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It reported last week its=
=20
ninth straight quarterly loss and has said it does not expect a profit this=
=20
year. The airline is the nation's eighth largest with hubs in Phoenix, Las=
=20
Vegas and Columbus, Ohio.
