Italian pilots plan for strike

ROME (AP) =97 Italian pilots were going on strike Tuesday, complaining that=
=20
they are overworked and that this could threaten flight safety. Pilots and=
=20
flight attendants were refusing to work for four hours Tuesday, causing=20
Italy's national carrier Alitalia to cancel 136 flights. The pilots' union=
=20
ANPAC complains that in Italy crews find themselves working for up to 17=20
hours consecutively, although 12-hour shifts are normal in many other=20
countries. Alitalia said that of its 253 flights scheduled for Tuesday, 82=
=20
national and 54 international flights would be canceled, although no=20
intercontinental flights were affected. The airline said 14,000 passengers=
=20
would not be able to fly during the strike. ENAC, the government agency=20
responsible for safety on airplanes, said Monday that it was considering=20
various solutions to the problem.
