Dutch airline KLM issues profit warning

   (01-06) 04:31 PST AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) --
Dutch airline KLM said Monday it expects to post a loss for its current
fiscal year, blaming a weakening economy and higher oil prices.
The airline had previously forecast a slight profit for the year ending
March 31.
"The impact of deteriorating economic conditions as well as the
geopolitical instability in certain regions of the world, which increased
oil prices, resulted in lower-than-expected traffic volumes and yields for
the KLM group during the past quarter," it said in a statement.
In an effort to cut costs, KLM has cut flights from Aberdeen, Scotland to
Stavanger, Norway and from Amsterdam to Abidjan, Ivory Coast. It is also
considering dropping other routes and selling planes, it said.
KLM said passenger traffic last month was 11 percent higher than in
December 2001, two months after the Sept. 11 attacks, but was up just 1
percent from December 2000.
The company will publish full results for its third fiscal quarter on Ja=
n.
23.
