Northwest begins new fee structure for heavy bags

Northwest Airlines began using a new fee structure for heavy checked
luggage over the weekend. The airline now charges $25 for a bag weighing
between 50 and 70 pounds, though its fees for luggage that weighs between
70 and 100 pounds drops from $80 to $50. Northwest doesn't accept bags that
weigh more than 100 pounds. The airline said the policy was created in
response to increasing back injuries among its workers. The new fee is
expected to affect about 10% of the airline's customers - 9% that will now
pay the $25 fee and 1% that will see a reduction, said Northwest spokesman
Kurt Ebenhoch. Many travelers had their exposure to the new fees at
Northwest's Minneapolis hub on Sunday, leaving more than a few unhappy,
according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. American Airlines announced it
would match Northwest's new fee structure.
