Late pay for BWIA workers

BWIA employees had not received their October salaries up to yesterday due=
=20
to a problem with the computer system.
But the problem has been resolved and workers are expected to be paid=20
today, according to president of the Aviation, Communication and Allied=20
Workers Union, Christopher Abraham. The airline has given itself until=20
tomorrow to come up with concessions to save it from receivership. BWIA=92s=
=20
CEO Conrad Aleong and communications manager Clint Williams have repeatedly=
=20
said that it is up to the airline staff to prevent BWIA from going=20
under.  A meeting will be held between airline employees and union=20
representatives at 6 p.m. today at Centre of Excellence, Macoya, to vote on=
=20
whether to agree to the cost-reducing concessions proposed by BWIA.

Following are the concessions BWIA is requesting of workers:

TALPA=97pilots (Monthly savings target US$125,000):
=95 Adjust work rules to achieve 3-day London and 14-hour duty limit.
=95 Cut crew meals
=95 Pay minimum guarantee hours for vacation leave
=95 Reduce annual leave by 7 calendar days
=95 Overtime net of sick leave
=95 Eliminate 5-hour credit for off-day call-outs

CATTU & ACAWU=97general staff (Monthly savings US$70,000):
=95 Reduce sick leave by six working days to 14 working days.
=95 Pay overtime for actual hours worked, at reduced premium rates. Overtime=
=20
paid at time and a half and not double time. Persons rostered to work=20
public holidays to be given the following day off or payment in lieu of=20
double time.
=95 Reduced rate for shift/rostered/night workers by 2% with no shift=
 premium=20
while on vacation
=95 Suspend subsistence allowances
=95 Raise employee contribution to meal chits to 50%
=95 Merge jobs for better cross-utilisation of staff.

ACAWU-flight attendants (Monthly savings US$100,000):
=95 Adjust work rules to achieve 3-day London and 14-hour duty limit
=95 Cut crew meals for duty post 9 a.m. of less than 7 hours
=95 Reduce annual leave by 5 days
=95 For work on off days either=96

a) A premium rate of 1.5 times; OR

b) Compensatory day off.
