New Bermuda airline bids for routes to Europe and USA Bermuda's newest airline in decades has applied to run direct flights to destinations in Europe and the United States, a published report said Saturday. Bermuda Star has filed an application to fly direct to Newark, Orlando, Chicago in the USA, and to Cologne, Germany, and Manchester, England, The Royal Gazette daily newspaper reported. The application to the government's Air Transport Licensing Board says the airline plans to fly daily to Newark and Chicago, three times a week to Manchester, three times a week to Cologne, and twice a week to Orlando. The company wants to establish the first direct scheduled flights to mainland Europe with the Cologne flights, according to the application. British Airways runs direct flights from London Gatwick Airport to this British mid-Atlantic resort island. The move was welcomed by the Bermuda Hotel Association as a step to address the island's traditional problems of expensive flights, lack of competition, and limited route.
