It may be good to point out here that you don't need to be a citizen to serve this country by enlisting in the military. Surely, that's every bit as critical to our national security as airport screening. The feds are having a helluva time filling the screening positions. If non-citizens want these thankless jobs, I say more power to them. This discussion reminds me of the debate years ago about the Mexican farm laborers. You think it's easy finding citizens willing to work that hard for that little? And of course we couldn't raise wages to attract Americanos or your food bill would go up. With the exception of listmembers who may be Native Americans, all of us come from immigrant stock. We're better than this. Suggest we all lighten up. For those who doesn't know squat about naturalization process, it takes a 5 year term after you get your permanent residency.. I find the most flag vawing, foreigner bashing people to be the least knowledgable about the immigration process. As most of those people would believe it doesn't take "just raising your hands" thing.. I find "I am willing to contribute to your one-way ticket" a funny way of saying that you want to do an ethnic cleansing in the USA. It's ironic and also sad to see that not sharing the views of administration has become a way to mark the people as non-American. My views will not change once I get to become an American citizen.. That's what is called democracy.. Only in dictatorships you are expected to agree with the government without any objection or leave the country (better yet leave the face of the Earth for good). Once for all, let's establish the facts, no airport screener was charged since Sep 11 related to the tragic events. Including this restriction in the hiring process has served the current administration who acts like the world is inhabited by only Americans.. As I have stated before, saying "I am glad that now Americans will be able to benefit from these positions" is nothing but hard core nationalist view. I said it before also, these jobs were there before 9/11 and not like American citizens were lining up for them. This press release is proving that it's still not attracting enough people.. I may be a bit harsh on the "fasict" remarks, but post 9/11 US is becoming more and more like pre1990 East Germany. The questions that every American and every resident of this country should ask is "Do we want 1,000,000 people to spy on us and have people convicted w/out any representation in the court?". If I was an American that would be the question that I'd be asking to myself. As a LEGAL resident of US of A , I have been doing that lately.. That always means using its own people - nations that depend on the UN for protection speak for themselves. As a naturalized American (i.e. I chose to be an American), I want to be checked out by an American. I find it incomprehensible that I am checked at airport security by a person who cannot speak English properly, although they maybe as American as me (I have grave doubts about this, but will give it a pass). The world is rife with anti-American sentiment now and frankly I don't give a hoot. If you don't like America, leave it, don't buy its products and express yourself in that manner. If your life is enriched by this anti-America policy, great. If you cannot stand Americans defending themselves (after they have defended much of the western world and fed the rest), please find a better planet. I will be pleased to contribute to your one-way ticket. I am proud to be an American and feel absolutely no shame in its greatness - I am thrilled by this nation and its people. Its great to be part of the USA. -----Original Message----- From: The Airline List [mailto:AIRLINE@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU]On Behalf Of John Kelly Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 7:00 AM To: AIRLINE@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU Subject: Re: Airport Screeners Hard to Come by So, Baha, are we to assume that because a country wants only its citizens to perform a specific function that we are "fascists?" by your reasoning, that would make many countries on this earth "fascist." I really don't want to go there, but that sounds eerily like a racist comment to me. Although we on the list wish to think of ourselves as "thinking globally," there are times when some national priorities take precedence over an enlightened perspective. The September 11 tragedy has changed many lives in the U.S.; and not for the better, either.
