BWIA gets subsidies from Govt By SHARON LYM (Trinidad GuardianJune 18, 2002) Prime Minister Patrick Manning said BWIA will be receiving government subsidies for its Tobago route. Speaking on Sunday at the launch of the airline's A340 aircraft at Piarco International Airport, Manning said if Government wished to develop the Tobago route, it has to be prepared to pay a subsidy to airlines "in some form or the other. "If you want to develop a particular route then the necessary support has to be given to airlines to do that. This will include BWIA. So that is a wide open door." Manning was responding to an appeal made earlier by BWIA chief executive officer Conrad Aleong at the ceremony. The decision was made after informal discussions were held recently in Tobago as part of a co-ordinating tourism industry exercise for the island. A sub-committee of the Cabinet met and BWIA's role in Tobago tourism industry was one of the items discussed, Manning said. "In the informal discussion, we had we endorsed the idea of BWIA forming a charter airline which I understand they are about to do with the L1011." Manning said. Clint Williams, BWIA corporation communications manager said while there has been some discussions about chartered flights, nothing definite has been decided.
