Yes, the MD-11 sim can be loaded with parameters that would have roughly resembled the performance of the A340. I've spoken casually with a couple of simulator techs a few times, and they basically mentioned once a initial software package is designed for a particular aircraft, it's pretty much tradable between comparable sims no matter what kind of aircraft it simulates. Or it could have been as simple as adjusting the take-off conditions to closely match the 340s performance at the time. It would be interested to find out for sure what they did. Side note: I just flew it myself in a couple types of aircraft (no A343 downloaded though) on FS2002 with the temp adjusted to make for a similar situation.....pretty scary. I did an exact tower view also with different magnifications and replayed it a few times...no doubt the local controller was freaking out.
