The old way: a cron job runs check-update nightly with all repos
enabled.

Yes.  I could exclude packages with conflicts so they don't get reported
(or just ignore them which is the simplest).

One exception to that scheme is with multimedia packages (xine, mplayer,
vlc for example).  Installing those from rpmforge with epel disabled
gets the best results.
