[root@xn05 yum.repos.d]# yum --version
Config Error: Error accessing file for config file:///etc/yum.conf
[root@xn05 yum.repos.d]# yum

And there is no /etc/yum.conf file ..
How to resolve this ?

look in /etc/yum/

do you see a yum.conf in there?

if so - move it or symlink it to /etc/yum.conf

and then tell the scientific linux folks for sl4 to fix their yum pkg.
