Also /lib/libssl.so.4 etc. not being owned seems a bit weird. Try running: package-cleanup --dupes ...from the yum-utils package. Also see if there is an update for yum, RHEL 5 (which Scientific Linux is based on, AIUI) is at 3.2.19-18.
